Tier B · TL;DR
One AI-infrastructure company in each software category trades at 3 to 8 times its category median because it monetizes agent proliferation directly

Claim

In each major software category, a single AI-infrastructure winner commands a valuation multiple 3 to 8 times the category median, not because it grows fastest, but because it earns revenue from every new AI agent deployed in its domain.

Mechanism

AI agents require existing infrastructure to operate: security for each endpoint, networking for each request, commerce rails for each purchase, governance for each workflow. The companies that occupied the infrastructure layer before the agent wave now receive compounding revenue from agent proliferation itself. Each new agent deployment is a new billing unit for the infrastructure provider.

CrowdStrike earns on each endpoint an agent represents. Cloudflare bills on agent request traffic, and more than half the traffic crossing its network is no longer human. Shopify earns its existing take-rate on agent-originated conversions, which convert new buyers at twice the rate of other channels. ServiceNow provides the governance layer that enterprises need before deploying agents. Salesforce holds the customer data that determines agent utility.

The market prices durability and compounding over growth rate. CrowdStrike grows at 23% while competitor Rubrik grows at 46%, yet CrowdStrike trades at a meaningful premium. The market is rewarding the AI story, the harness, the inference revenue, and the structural position, not the trailing growth number.

Conditions

Holds when: a software category has a clear infrastructure layer that AI agents must traverse, and one company has established dominance in that layer. Fails when: the category infrastructure is commoditized or distributed across many providers with no clear dominant position. Also fails when: the winner's AI agent positioning is replicable at lower cost by challengers.

Evidence

Tunguz measured valuation multiples against category medians as of August 11, 2026. CrowdStrike trades at 34.4x ARR, 3.9x its Security category median. Cloudflare trades at 32.6x ARR, 3.4x its Infrastructure median. Shopify trades at 11.3x ARR, 8.1x its Commerce median. ServiceNow trades at 7.4x ARR. Salesforce at 4.0x ARR. Public software multiples overall sit near historic lows; these premiums are relative, not absolute market exuberance.

Signals

Counter-evidence

The premium reflects future agent proliferation expectations, not current revenue. If the agent deployment cycle slows or AI productivity gains reduce the number of agents enterprises run, the durability premium could compress sharply. Cloudflare and CrowdStrike both compete in markets with well-funded challengers who could capture the agent-billing opportunity without the incumbents' pricing power. The multiples also incorporate general software market conditions that could shift independent of AI agent dynamics.
