Tier B · TL;DR
UGC platforms hold 4x more AI-cited domains than publishers; community signals are AI search's largest unoptimized variable

Claim

User-generated content platforms hold 17.1% of AI-cited domains in SaaS-related queries, more than four times the 4.0% share held by publishers, yet they receive the least investment in most AEO programs.

Mechanism

AI models draw citations proportional to topical authority and high-trust inbound signals from the broader web. Wikipedia, Reddit, and LinkedIn alone account for 99% of UGC citations. These platforms accumulate trust signals that pure brand-owned content cannot replicate: editorial independence, crowdsourced factual correction, and persistent community engagement that search engines and AI retrieval systems treat as third-party corroboration.

The citation share of UGC remains stable across purchase stages: 17.8% at awareness, 18.2% at consideration, 15.1% at evaluation, 17.2% at decision. Review platforms, by contrast, peak at evaluation (13.2%) and collapse elsewhere. Publishers average 4.0% throughout. This cross-stage consistency indicates a structural retrieval preference, not an intent-match effect.

Content freshness amplifies the signal. Stale pages lose AI citations at more than 3x the rate of fresh ones, and 83% of commercial query citations come from pages updated within 12 months. Treating community platforms as a set-it-and-forget-it presence forfeits compounding freshness advantages.

Conditions

Holds when: the target queries are SaaS or B2B commercial intent. Applies across AI search products (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode) with Perplexity rewarding Reddit participation most heavily, Google AI Mode moderately, and ChatGPT least. Fails when: the product category has no meaningful community presence on Wikipedia, Reddit, or LinkedIn, reducing the addressable UGC signal surface.

Evidence

Indig analyzed approximately 35,000 ChatGPT citation URLs segmented by purchase stage. UGC platforms held 17.1% of cited domains, compared to review platforms at 11.2% and publishers at 4.0%. Wikipedia, Reddit, and LinkedIn accounted for 99% of UGC citations, with Wikipedia alone representing 10.1 to 14.0 percentage points across stages. Stale pages, defined as not updated within 12 months, lost AI citations at more than 3x the rate of current pages.

Signals

Counter-evidence

Indig notes that the UGC citation share is dominated by three platforms, leaving the remaining 1% distributed across long-tail community sources. Brands without genuine community participation cannot manufacture Reddit presence through brand accounts without risking detection and platform penalties. The citation advantage accrues over months of authentic engagement, not weeks, making this a slow-compounding strategy. Results also vary significantly by AI product; Perplexity's Reddit weighting does not generalize to ChatGPT or Google.
